Walkabout Wildlife Book Fair

Local Authors go Wild on the NSW Central Coast

Mates’ Rates Discounts for first Walkabout Wildlife Book Fair

This year’s Walkabout Wildlife Book Fair, the first ever held at the sanctuary, will feature eight books by five local authors – four from the Central Coast and one from Sydney.

Instead of $33 for adult tickets and $22 for children, all tickets for August 3rd will be $20 - provided you quote the discount code GDAY6 before paying (at the door, or using the online link below). Plus, everyone who buys at least one book from each of the five authors on the day - and has a stamped 'passport' to show rangers as evidence - can claim a free annual pass worth $90!

In addition to the sanctuary’s ranger-led animal encounters, ticket-holders can access an exciting program of activities offered in The Barn, Walkabout’s new educational facility located close to the meerkat enclosure. There’ll be free kids’ craft activities, readings, musical story times and presentations, as well as book sales, signings and a chance to chat with the writers. Some are offering special discounts, giveaways, or donating a portion of their profits to wildlife conservation. While there is a focus on kids’ literature, adults can also find their next great read at the book fair, especially if they are interested in travel or wildlife:

•    Vet nurse Tanya Middleton wrote Kenny and the Sticky Trap after a distressed kookaburra was brought into the clinic where she works. Tanya will be reading her book to young visitors at 11:15 and 13:45.

•    Biologist and science teacher Dr Ann Göth is the author of children's picture book Bush-Turkey Needs a Friend, and a memoir of seventeen months researching birds on a remote island, Volcanic Adventures in Tonga. Ann's third book is Amazing Annoying Birds, for those - including keen gardeners - wanting to learn about sharing our habitat with these controversial native birds. Ann will be presenting on this topic at 10:45 and 13:15.

•    Singer-songwriter Leigh Hardingham brings his love for music and the Australian bush to Three Dancing Frogs. Leigh will be at the fair until 13:00, with his book on sale all day. Leigh (and his guitar) will be delivering musical story times at 9:45 and 11:45.

•    Ray on the Reef is a lift-the-flap board book perfect for younger children. Pip Jacobs, who both wrote and illustrated the book, is donating a dollar from each sale to marine wildlife research and conservation. Pip will be reading Ray on the Reef and using fun props to chat with kids about ocean creatures at 10:15 and 12:45.

•    There are also two popular travel books: Unpacking for Greece and Repacking for Greece. “Mine look like the odd ones out,” says Sally Jane Smith, “but there’s a chapter that tells of how I moved to Australia to help my sister Tassin run Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary all the way back in 2008.”  At 14:15, Sally will facilitate an informal group chat with any visitors who remember, plan or dream of travel in Greece.
