Discover the award-winning Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre

The NSW Central Coast's Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre has taken home the 2024 Newcastle Excellence in Building Award in the Public Buildings category (under $5 million).

Located in the stunning Central Coast hinterland, Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre has been recognised for its exceptional design and craftsmanship, winning the 2024 Newcastle Excellence in Building Award in the Public Building category (under $5 million).

Created in partnership with Slater Architects, this beautifully designed Centre connects with surrounding landscape, offering visitors an enriching and immersive experience.  Thoughtfully positioned to frame breathtaking views of Mangrove Creek Dam, the building’s butterfly roof and natural finishes reflect the beauty of the local landscape while meeting strict bushfire safety standards.

Built in collaboration with North Construction & Building, the Centre was also shortlisted for the 2025 Newcastle Architecture Awards in the Public Architecture category, further cementing its reputation for innovation and sustainability.

Community consultation helped to shape the design, ensuring that the Centre reflects their vision for the site at Kulnura. Built after the 2019 Three Mile Fire devastated the original picnic area, the Centre invites visitors to explore the natural environment, local Indigenous heritage, and the critical role of Mangrove Creek Dam in the Central Coast’s water supply.

With its rich educational experiences and breathtaking views of the Central Coast’s largest dam, the Centre significantly enhances the hinterland’s appeal as a vibrant tourism destination.

The $3.2 million project was rebuilt after Central Coast Council received $2.567 million from the Commonwealth and NSW Government’s Bushfire Local Economic Recovery (BLER) Fund.

Mangrove Creek Dam Visitor Centre is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm (excluding Christmas Day), and offers picnic shelters, a children’s play area, and accessible amenities. The site will close during periods of extreme or catastrophic fire danger to ensure public safety.
